, sort of playing a prevent defense against newt gingrich. but then once gingrich won south carolina, he turned it on. the next couple of debates, everybody talked about gingrich master debater and romney won. he does have some debating skills. >> he's good under pressure. and the good part is, he's under pressure. >> here's the historical problem with that, there's very little correlation between debate performance and changing the dynamic of a race. you have to search wide and far to find somewhere where the debate has changed the dynamic in the race in a person who's not leading 45 days out if a guy comes back and wins that race. he's up against history here for changing the dynamic. >> but there is a challenge. he has to be likable. only one out of five americans are going to watch this. those are the opinion makers across this country. what he has to be is likable. the pundits say, he didn't make this point or that point. you decide who wins a debate on television with a sound-off, not on. >> i disagree with you a little bit. you go back to 2004. john kerry went into the '04 deb

know now, barbara? >> well, wolf, defense secretary panetta a little bit unexpectedly getting right into the latest intelligence, what he knows and what he doesn't know about syria's chemical weapons. a top syrian opposition group claims it captured these missiles in damascus and said they had been adapted to carry chemical and biological warheads. cnn cannot independently confirm the claim. but now a new admission from defense secretary leon panetta. syria's chemical weapons have been on the move. and he's not sure what exactly has happened. >> there has been intelligence that there have been some moves that have taken place. where exactly that's taken place, we don't know. >> reporter: panetta insists that bashar al assad's forces still control the major chemical and biological sites, but there are security concerns. >> there has been some intelligence that with regards to some of these sites that there's been some movement in order to -- for the syrians to better secure what they -- the chemicals. >> reporter: rebels clearly are making a public play that they can get to the weapo

outlined goals during the debate, they were largely defensive. >> i think he was criticizing the ryan-esque vision on medicare and taxes. it's hard to say what else he displayed passion about. i have felt all year this is the biggest hole in their campaign. i don't think he has given americans a clear sense of what he would do to make the next four years better than the last four years. there was almost no second-term agenda. things that have been -- what is it that obama himself wants to do? certainly in this next debate he's going to be more aggressive. can he be more persuasive about his own plans? >> and mitt romney ought to be more aggressive in pushing the president to talk about his agenda. because of course the president is tying him to the ryan budget, for better or worse, what is he going to do about medicare, what's he going to do about tax reform. it is true that romney hasn't put a lot of meat on the bones when it comes to what he would do to reform the tax code. what deductions would he cap. he started getting at that a little bit this past week. well, then why doesn't h
